LL: Body Positivity

7:21:00 PM

I've only lived for 27 years, but I've acquired a ton of useless knowledge — or as my mom calls them "my own Snapple Facts." Today I'm going to be discussing body positivity because I think it's something everyone could use a little more of.

Ready?

As someone who's always struggled with hating some aspect of her body, I've recently become more in love and in tune with my body as I've gotten older. But recently, a certain encounter had me judging my body for the first time in awhile.

I want to start off by saying please LOVE YOUR BODY! Your body is absolutely amazing. It is the most selfless machine on the planet. It doesn't care who you are, your socio-economic background, what you do for a living — none of that matters. Your body does everything it can to keep you fully functioning and healthy even if you don't take care of it.

When I leave my iPhone in the sun too long it powers off, but when I'm in the sun too long my skin burns then peels. Do you know why it does that? Because it's getting rid of unhealthy skin that could develop cancer. Your body wants nothing more than for you to be your awesome self.

Your body is amazing okay? And you should love every single inch of it.

So as I was saying, I really think body positivity is something we should all strive for. I know it's hard, believe me, I know. I've struggled with eating disorders and body dysmorphia — loving my body is a constant struggle. But I'm here to tell you, it's worth it in the end. Wear what you want, shave, don't shave, rock those jiggly thighs and stretch marks. You don't want to wear a bra? Go for it. Want to wear short-shorts because they look fantastic on you but gender norms are saying no? SCREW THAT! Just do it.

If you come across someone who doesn't love something on your body, screw them! Not literally, of course, that would defeat the whole point of this post. But if you're like me and find yourself with someone who was only looking out for their own selfish needs and didn't even think twice about you or compliment you, then you should do what I wish I did and get the eff up and leave. Because if not, it leaves you second guessing yourself, maybe blaming yourself and apologizing to them because you think you were the issue. Hell. No. It is always them. Always. In the words of Taking Back Sunday, boys like you are a dime a dozen. So don't waste time on people who don't deserve to be in the presence of your spectacular body.

So please do me a favor: Look in the mirror right now and thank your body for all of the bad ass stuff it does for you. Thank your heart, your lungs, your legs, your back, your dimples and smile. Your body is awesome and so are you.
