An Interview With A Band Called The Maine

7:00:00 PM

I recently sat down with John O'Callaghan and Garrett Nickelsen of The Maine. In our interview, we talked about why they'll never do a 10-year tour of past albums and the deal with their new take on how they present themselves. Plus, they reveal when they almost broke up.

Would you say new your signage on stage and at your merch booth is a message to bands to not take themselves so seriously?
John: I think it's a message to us. We've been doing this for 10 years and I think, if anything, it's just a reminder that it's supposed to be fun. Music is supposed to be a good time and the moment you start taking yourself too seriously, I think, that's when you lose touch with reality. What we're trying to communicate is that we're making it up as we go. It's like as many times as we've done it, we're still figuring it out. I think that that's a good reminder for us and hopefully for people who come out to these shows. We don't view people on a pedestal. There's no such thing as idols.

On that same note, would you ever do a 10-year anniversary tour for Can't Stop Won't Stop like many other bands are doing for their first album?
J: We're trying to put ourselves in a position where we don't have to do that because it seems to be such a repetitious thing.
G: I think that it's not that we don't want to play those songs, it's more that we're trying to focus on what's going on now. Bands that have been broken up for like five years come back and do that and it's like ,"What?!?" Maybe that year we'll play more songs from that record. That'd be cool. Or one time just fucking play the whole thing and not tell anyone.

Looking to the future, is there already a new album in the works?
G: Yeah!
J: We started before Warped Tour because there are so many things going on and our days are busy. We'll be writing collectively and then end of October we'll be recording!

The Maine will be performing their last show of 2016 at The Studio at Webster Hall September 23! Yours truly will, of course, be in attendance!
